FAQs

The Forestry Department is responsible for planting, maintaining and removing trees on the boulevards of Duluth. Trees are an important part of the City’s infrastructure and provide many benefits to the citizens including reducing pollution and storm water runoff, reduce home energy costs, stabilize soils, decrease noise pollution, provide wildlife habitat and increase property values. In addition to the 12,000+ boulevard trees, our staff also oversees park trees and hazardous trees in undeveloped parklands.

Duluth is a Tree City USA Community

The Tree City USA program was founded in 1976 to recognize a community's commitment to growing and maintaining their urban forest. Sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, the Tree City USA program is a national movement honoring the many benefits we receive from urban trees.

To earn the annual Tree City USA designation, communities must:

  1. Maintain a tree board or department,
  2. Have a community tree care ordinance,
  3. Spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and
  4. Celebrate Arbor Day.

Duluth has maintained its Tree City USA recognition for 31 years!

Tree City USA communities are also eligible for the Arbor Day Foundation's Growth Award, which recognizes milestones that demonstrate a high level of tree care and community engagement. Duluth has received the Growth Award for 5 years!
