Mechanical HVAC

  • Heating appliance such as a furnace, boiler, space heater or gas fire place installation.
  • Ductwork, radiant heat, in-floor heat, or baseboard heat installation.
  • Air-conditioning installation.
  • Refrigeration equipment installation.
  • High pressure steam/gas installation.
  • All mechanical appliances and equipment.

  • Portable heating appliances.
  • Portable ventilation appliances and equipment.
  • Portable cooling units.
  • Steam, hot, or chilled water piping within any heating or cooling equipment regulated by this code.
  • Replacement of any part that does not alter approval of equipment or make the equipment unsafe.
  • Portable evaporative coolers.
  • Self-contained refrigeration systems containing ten pounds (4.5 kg) or less of refrigerant or that are actuated by motors of one horsepower (0.75 kW) or less.
  • Portable fuel cell appliances that are not connected to a fixed piping system and are not interconnected to a power grid.

Residential Single Family Dwelling- A person who owns and occupies the single family dwelling may perform mechanical work OR Mechanical Contractor with a registered bond with the MN Department of Labor Industry.

Other Residential/Commercial- Mechanical Contractor with a registered bond with the MN Department of Labor Industry ONLY.

Inspections must be requested prior to any work being covered within the walls, ceilings, floors or earth. The most common inspections are in floor hydronic tubing, ductwork installation, appliance venting, air conditioning, mechanical appliance and equipment installation.  For other inspections that may be required, please refer to the Permit Card. An example Permit Card can be found here.

ALL mechanical permits usually require multiple inspections, including a final inspection.

If a final inspection is not requested and completed, that information will be available to any interested party.
