Minnesota Paid Leave (MNPL ) Overview
Minnesota Paid Leave (MNPL) is an insurance program designed to help people in Minnesota take paid time off work for family or medical reasons.
Minnesota Paid Leave law is funded through employer and employee contributions. It is different from the federal Family and Medical Leave Act, and from any other benefits the City of Duluth might already offer.
Paid Leave offers payments and job protections for some of life's most important moments. Eligibility for payments depends on how much you earned in the past year.
To receive payments, you must apply and be approved for leave. To be approved, you must experience an event that qualifies for Paid Leave and your leave may need to be certified by a professional.
What Minnesota Paid leave covers:
Medical Leave: Up to 12 weeks to recover from your own serious health condition, including pregnancy, childbirth, or surgery.
Family Leave: Up to 12 weeks to care for a family member with a serious health condition or to bond with a new child.
Combined Leave: A maximum of 20 weeks in a single benefit year if both medical and family leave are needed.
Paid Leave payments
Benefit payments will cover a portion of an individual’s usual pay during a qualified leave. Eligibility for payments will be based on earnings in the previous year.
Paid Leave job protection
Paid Leave will ensure that employees are able to return to their job after taking leave. If someone has worked at their job for at least 90 days, their job will be protected when they return from leave.
Paid Leave funding
Paid Leave is a social insurance program. Both employers and employees will contribute premiums to the fund.
Paid Leave supports Minnesotans when they need time to care and strengthens connection in our families, communities, and workplaces.
