Veteran's Preference
Are You a Veteran?
(See MN Statute 197.447 for veteran definition)
Based on MN Statute 197.455, you may be eligible to apply for Veteran's Preference. At the time of of application submission, you need to attach a copy of the supporting documentation listed for the option that applies to you. To attach documents to an online application, you will need to scan together all documents you wish to attach to create one file, and upload the file in the "Attachments" area of the online application. You are not required to supply this information, but we cannot award Veteran's Preference points without it. Veterans points will be added only if the applicant successfully completes all phases of the exam process and Human Resources has received all supporting documentation.
Veteran
- Documentation needed:
- "Member Copy 4" DD214 or DD215 indicating an honorable discharge
- 10 preference points awarded
Disabled Veteran
- Documentation needed:
- "Member Copy 4" DD214 or DD215 indicating an honorable discharge
- FL-802, FL 21-802, or USDVA Disability Rating Board's written decision of a compensation rating of 10% or greater (dated within 12 months)
- 15 preference points awarded
Spouse of Disabled Veteran
- Documentation needed:
- Marriage certificate
- "Member Copy 4" DD214 or DD215 indicating an honorable discharge
- FL-802, FL 21-802, or USDVA Disability Rating Board's written decision of a compensation rating of 10% or greater (dated within 12 months)
- Eligible if applicant is still married to veteran, and veteran meets the minimum qualifications for the classification but is unable to use the preference because of the service-connected disability
- 15 preference points awarded
Spouse of Deceased Veteran
- Documentation needed:
- Marriage certificate
- Death certificate
- "Member Copy 4" DD214 or DD215 indicating an honorable discharge
- FL-802, FL 21-802, or USDVA Disability Rating Board's written decision of a compensation rating of 10% or greater
- Eligible if applicant has not remarried and veteran died during active duty or as a result of an injury received from active duty
- 10 preference points awarded
- 15 preference points awarded if veteran had 10% compensable service-connected disability prior to death
Promotional/Internal Exams - Disabled Veteran
- Documentation needed:
- "Member Copy 4" DD214 or DD215 indicating an honorable discharge
- FL-802, FL 21-802, or USDVA Disability Rating Board's written decision of a compensation rating of 50% or greater (dated within 12 months)
- 5 preference points awarded one time, on first promotion after securing City employment
