Veteran's Preference
Are You a Veteran?
(See MN Statute 197.447 for the legal definition of a veteran.)
Under MN Statute 197.455, veterans may qualify for preference points in hiring.
To apply, attach the required documents when submitting your application.
- Scan and combine all documents into one file before uploading it to the Attachments section of your application.
- Submitting this information is optional, but preference points cannot be awarded without it.
- Points are only added if you pass all exams and submit all required documents to Human Resources.
Veteran
- Required Documents:
- DD214 or DD215 ("Member-4" copy) showing honorable discharge
- 10 preference points awarded
Disabled Veteran
- Required Documents:
- DD214 or DD215 ("Member-4" copy) showing honorable discharge
- FL-802, FL 21-802, or USDVA Disability Rating Board decision with a 10% or greater disability rating (dated within 12 months)
- 15 preference points awarded
Spouse of Disabled Veteran
- Required Documents:
- Marriage certificate
- DD214 or DD215 ("Member-4" copy) showing honorable discharge
- FL-802, FL 21-802, or USDVA Disability Rating Board decision with a 10% or greater disability rating (dated within 12 months)
- Eligibility:
- The applicant must still be married to the veteran
- The veteran must qualify for the job but cannot use the preference due to a service-connected disability
- 15 preference points awarded
Spouse of Deceased Veteran
- Required Documents:
- Marriage certificate
- Death certificate
- DD214 or DD215 ("Member-4" copy) showing honorable discharge
- FL-802, FL 21-802, or USDVA Disability Rating Board decision with a 10% or greater disability rating (dated within 12 months)
- Eligibility
- The applicant must not have remarried
- The veteran must have died during active duty or from an injury related to active duty
- 10 preference points awarded
- 15 preference points awarded if the veteran had a 10% or greater service-connected disability before their death
Promotional/Internal Exams - Disabled Veteran
- Required Documents:
- DD214 or DD215 ("Member-4" copy) showing honorable discharge
- FL-802, FL 21-802, or USDVA Disability Rating Board decision with a 50% or greater disability rating (dated within 12 months)
- 5 preference points awarded (one-time use for first promotion after City employment)
