Buffalo Street Concrete Alley Apron
Project Status:
Completed Phase
Project Overview:
To address a specific drainage issue identified by the City based on residents reporting the problem, the City designed and constructed a concrete alley apron for the Kenwood Avenue Alley on Buffalo Street. The project included a section of curb and gutter to convey stormwater to a nearby catch basin preventing storm water from bypassing the storm sewer and causing localized nuisance flooding and erosion of the downgradient alley.
Before the project was constructed stormwater runoff from Buffalo Street would run down the Kenwood Avenue Alley on to Toledo Street bypassing the catch basin on Buffalo Street located near Kenwood Avenue. This added stormwater volume caused nuisance flooding for the homes on Toledo Street, before it enters the storm sewer near Humes Avenue.
The concrete alley apron is designed to keep the stormwater in Buffalo Street preventing it from running down the alley and causing problems on other streets. With the added curb and gutter, the stormwater will be directed to a catch basin, so the water can enter the storm sewer, where it was originally designed to go. This project would not have been possible without the underlining issue being brought to the attention to the City by nearby residents.
