Water Quality and Testing
Testing for Lead Before Replacement
The City does not currently offer free water testing for all individual households to determine lead concentrations. Residents that are interested in having their water tested for lead, may follow the link below for a full list of accredited laboratories in the State of Minnesota.
Testing for Lead After Replacement
Locations that have had a lead line replacement are automatically sent a water sampling kit approximately 4 to 6 months after construction. Residents are given instructions on how to collect the sample and return it through the mail. Results will be mailed within a few weeks after the sample is received at the lab.
Water Treatment Optimization Using Orthophosphate
Drinking water systems containing lead service lines are required to use treatment strategies to prevent lead from dissolving into drinking water. Duluth is working to optimize its treatment using an orthophosphate additive with the goal of reducing residents’ exposure to lead, initially in the Woodland, Kenwood, and Morley Heights-Parkview neighborhoods beginning in the fall of 2026.
The inclusion of orthophosphate to the drinking water is expected to reduce lead exposure, particularly for those who are served by a lead service line. This additive is certified by the National Sanitary Foundation (NSF) for use in drinking water and is used by cities across our state and country. There are no known health concerns associated with orthophosphate treatment.
See our FAQ page for more details about orthophosphate in our water system.
