Azrin Awal (she/they) is a community leader who works at the intersection of public health, policy, education, and social justice. Azrin identifies as a Muslim, Bengali, Asian-American, and queer woman dedicated to equity and social justice. Azrin is a first-generation University of Minnesota Duluth alum with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Public Health, with a focus on Psychology and Class, Gender and Sexuality studies. Azrin is passionate about learning, advocating, and movement-building for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
She serves as an elected At-Large City Councilor for the City of Duluth, Minnesota, where she supports, develops, and implements effective public policy that creates a thriving and inclusive community. She is also a Program Coordinator with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), where she promotes the recruitment, retention, and success of Black, Indigenous, Students of Color, and Queer students through cultural outreach and student development.
Azrin is an active member of the Duluth community. They serve as a board member on the following advisory boards and commissions: Duluth Parks Commission, Duluth Library Board, Duluth Library Foundation, Community Action Duluth, and Duluth HRA. In the past, she has served as the Council Liaison/Chair of the Purchasing and Licensing Council Committee (2022) and the Personal Council Committee (2023) and served on the Duluth Intergovernmental Committee (2022). She is also a member of the Duluth Branch of the NAACP, Twin Ports DSA, and Local Progress, where she serves on the Local Progress Minnesota (LPMN) Organizing Committee (2022-2024).
Azrin is passionate about lifelong learning, storytelling, art, and travel and uses her diverse experiences and perspectives to foster collaboration and empowerment among her constituents and colleagues.
