Public comment opportunities for the Magney-Snively Designated Natural Area draft management plan coming soon

[DULUTH, MN] The draft, updated management plan for the Magney-Snively Designated Natural Area will be available for in-person public comment at upcoming public meetings at Duluth City Hall:

  • Natural Resource Commission Meeting on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at 6:00 pm in City Hall conference room 330;
  • Planning Commission Meeting on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 5:00 pm in Council Chambers;
  • Duluth City Council Meeting (expected) on August 24, 2026 at 6:00 pm in Council Chambers.

Duluth’s Designated Natural Area Program requires that each Designated Natural Area have a management plan to guide the City and its partners on how to prioritize protection and restoration projects in the natural area. The original management plan for Magney-Snively was developed in 2003. Over the past year, the City has been developing an updated plan to reflect current uses, ecological conditions, threats, and funding opportunities. The update includes recent assessments of birds and bird habitat, Stewart and Sargent Creeks, and the native plant communities present. An advisory committee comprised of natural resources professionals and representatives from recreational groups that use the area aided the City in developing this plan, which provides a list of prioritized restoration and protection actions, target timelines, and approximate costs. The Minnesota Land Trust also provided funding and assistance to the City in the development of the plan.
