Buckthorn removal and pile burn in Hartley Park on Wednesday

[DULUTH, MN] On Wednesday, Community Action Duluth will be burning piles of cut buckthorn, an invasive plant species, on the northeastern side of Hartley Park along Woodland Avenue starting Wednesday and into next week. This activity has been permitted by the Duluth Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office. It is anticipated that smoke will be visible in and around Hartley while the slash piles are being burned.

Community Action Duluth has been cutting buckthorn as part of the City's Natural Resource Management Program since January thanks to funding from the Sustain Our Great Lakes grant program. Hartley is one of three designated natural areas in the city and invasive species removal is an action set forth in the management plan for Hartley. Buckthorn is an invasive species that cannot be transported away from the site from which it was cut; it must be either burned or chipped on site. Once the site is cleared, it will be replanted as part of a stormwater management project coordinated and funded by Saint Louis County. Information about the stormwater management project can be found here: https://duluthmn.gov/parks/parks-planning/progress-in-the-parks/woodland-hartley-green-infrastructure/
