Tree removals in Hartley Park will begin on December 18 for Woodland Avenue stormwater treatment project
[DULUTH, MN] Tree removals in the northeast corner of Hartley Park will begin on Monday, December 18. The removal of select trees in the project area is necessary for the future installation of stormwater treatment basins as a component of the Woodland Avenue project, and associated habitat improvements. Removing the trees in the winter months, rather than completing removals in the spring, will reduce the potential disruption to birds and bats by avoiding nesting and migrating times. The creation of the stormwater basins is intended to improve water quality and trout habitat in Tischer Creek by capturing and filtering the salt, sand, litter, and other pollutants that wash from Woodland Avenue and the Woodland neighborhood. Additionally, the project will include establishing native plants and restoring the quality of habitat.
In 2024, St. Louis County Public Works is scheduled to make numerous improvements on Woodland Avenue next year between Snively Road and Anoka Street, including repaving, replacing curbs and gutters, creating a center turn lane, and adding sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian crossings for improved safety. The City of Duluth and St. Louis County have partnered to move forward with the stormwater treatment basins.
