Duluth Workforce Development Provides New Career Training for the New Year, Seeks Applicants for Programs

[DULUTH, MN] Duluth Workforce Development, in partnership with SOAR Career Solutions and Duluth Adult Education, is reaching out to residents of St. Louis, Carlton, and Lake Counties to provide career training in high-demand fields like the health care industry and building trades.

“We know that the new year is a great time to think about life changes and improvements, and we’re looking to inspire our workforce to consider taking part in these training opportunities right now by driving home this ‘New Year, New Career, Start Now!’ message,” says Elena Foshay, Director of Duluth Workforce Development. “If your resolution is to start a new career that offers good wages, opportunities for advancement, and great benefit packages, Duluth Workforce Development has you covered.”

Eligible applicants can participate in DWD’s training programs at no cost to them, and in a relatively short time will be prepared to work in these high-demand industries right here in Duluth.

Health Services will be held at Lake Superior College from January 23 to April 19, 2023, and is designed for those interested in working in the medical field in an administrative capacity. Students will be prepared for roles such as Patient Account Representative, Registration, Health Unit Coordinator, and Medical Receptionist. Students can earn college credit as well as a certificate in Microsoft Office. Typical starting wages are as high as $16-$18 per hour.

Building Strong Communities is a hybrid online/in-person course where participants learn about the building trades and complete their OSHA10 and MC3 credentials.  During training, students engage with employers and union representatives, experience hands-on activities at a number of trades training facilities, gain interview experience and feedback, and receive support through the job search process. Participants must have their High School Diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license. Building Strong Communities begins on January 23 and runs through May 4. Graduates are prepared to enter union apprenticeships in the building trades, which offer earn-while-you-learn opportunities with excellent wage and benefit packages.

Class A or B CDL Training is a hybrid online/in-person course through Lake Superior College. Participants will be trained for a wide range of job opportunities as local or long-distance truck drivers.  Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record, and be able to pass a physical exam and drug test.

Certified Nursing Assistant training begins March 20 and is a hybrid/in-person course at Lake Superior College, with an option to continue on to complete Trained Medication Aide certification.  The typical starting wage for this position is as high as $16-$18, with job opportunities through a wide variety of employers with diverse clientele.

Duluth Workforce Development can also support paid internships for students pursuing college degrees in manufacturing, information technology, healthcare, and transportation. Individuals wishing to apply for Career Pathway Training can do so online at https://duluthmn.gov/workforce-development/application-for-services/, by calling DWD at (218) 302-8400, or by stopping by CareerForce at 402 W.
