Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park) remains closed to vehicular traffic until further notice
[Duluth, MN] The City of Duluth reminds residents and visitors that Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park) is closed to vehicular traffic until further notice due to planned construction of a new access road and parking, which is expected to be completed in fall 2023. The park remains accessible to pedestrians, paddlers, cyclists, and other users via the newly extended Lakewalk, Lake Superior, and the Brighton Beach hiking trail.
The Brighton Beach Mini-Master Plan, adopted August 19, 2019, calls for relocation of the road away from the shoreline and restoration of the shoreline to better endure Lake Superior storms. The initial closure began last fall coinciding with the Lakewalk extension. Shoreline and park improvements are anticipated to begin in late summer 2022, requiring additional closures which will be announced at that time.
Until the new road and parking areas are constructed, Brighton Beach users are encouraged to park in existing lots at Lester Park and dedicated parking areas along London Road and Scenic Highway 61, utilizing trails to access the park.
Due to upcoming short and long-term closures for construction, there will be no events, programming, or reservations allowed at Brighton Beach until fall of 2023 at the earliest.
