The Duluth Fire Department responded to report of a structure fire at 12:29 this afternoon at 2314 W. 8th St. Upon arrival, heavy fire was located in the attic of a three story wood frame triplex. Firefighters attempted to attack the fire from the interior, but difficult attic access and a smoke explosion in the attic hampered their efforts.
Master streams were used to knock down the main body of the fire; at which times crews were able to enter and complete extinguishment.
Three families were displaced by the fire, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters responded with an initial three engines, two ladder companies and one rescue squad. Two additional engine companies were called to the scene. A total of twenty four firefighters battled the fire for approximately five hours.
Damage to the structure is estinated at $85,000, and contents at $75,000. The Fire Marshal's office is conducting a origin and cause investigation.
The Red Cross was assisting displaced families with their needs.
This was the second structure fire in Lincoln Park today. Firefighters also responded to 2704 W. 6th St. this morning and extinguished a attic fire in a two-story single family home. Damage estimates are at $15,000 for that fire, and there were no injuries.
The cause of the earlier fire has been determined to be an overloaded electrical circuit.
