MEDIA ADVISORY: Duluth Parks and Recreation's Girls' Flag Football game at Wheeler Athletic Complex on Tuesday, October 13
Tuesday, October 13, 2026 | 7:30 pm | Wheeler Athletic Fields, 3501 Grand Avenue, Duluth
[DULUTH, MN] Duluth Parks and Recreation’s Youth Flag Football comes to a close next week. With the season close, Parks and Rec staff would like to invite the media to highlight the City’s first-ever girls’ flag football team at their final game this year.
The 350+ player league is open to participants from kindergarten through eighth grade, divided into three age groups: kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, and sixth through eighth grade. With a total of 24 girls in the co-ed league this year, Parks and Rec staff determined it was time to allow the girls in grades six through eight, at their request, to form their own all-girls teams this year.
Youth flag football participation has been on the rise over the past few years, and Duluth hopes to see continued growth in interest from girls as overall interest in the sport continues to expand. Duluth Parks and Recreation staff are working to encourage that enthusiasm by creating opportunities for these girls to play together, with the hope that the demand will necessitate the expansion of girls’ teams into more age groups.
The all-girls’ team will play on Tuesday, October 13 at 7:30 PM at the Wheeler
Athletic Complex. City of Duluth Recreation Specialist Austin Sommerfeld will be on-hand at the game to field any interview requests.
