City of Duluth introduces sensory-friendly inclusivity kit for use by Duluth City Council meeting attendees

 

 

[DULUTH, MN] The City of Duluth is expanding accessibility at its City Council meetings with the introduction of a new sensory-friendly inclusivity kit, now available for anyone attending meetings in City Council Chambers at Duluth City Hall.

The kit, generously donated by a Duluth resident and former member of the Commission on Disabilities, contains a variety of fidget toys and books designed to support children, teens, and adults who may benefit from sensory tools or who wish to explore themes of inclusion and belonging. The books, intended for children and young adults, feature stories that celebrate diversity, accessibility, and inclusion.

Items in the kit are available for loan during all City Council meetings and is located near the entrance to City Council Chambers. Attendees are welcome to borrow any of the items while attending a meeting and are kindly asked to return them to the kit before leaving so they remain available for future visitors.

Sensory inclusion helps create environments where people with autism, ADHD, anxiety, sensory processing differences, dementia, and other conditions can participate more comfortably in community activities. Simple tools such as fidget items can help individuals regulate sensory input, improve focus, and reduce stress, making public meetings more accessible and welcoming. Creating inclusive spaces benefits everyone by encouraging broader civic participation and ensuring more residents feel comfortable engaging with local government.

The kit’s donor hopes the collection of children's and young adult books will help City Council meetings feel more welcoming for families and young attendees.

Residents attending City Council meetings are encouraged to take advantage of the sensory-friendly and inclusivity kit whenever it may enhance their experience. The City of Duluth extends its gratitude to Ashlie Castaldo, the resident whose generosity made this resource possible and whose commitment to inclusion will benefit the Duluth community for years to come.
