West Superior Street reconstruction project update for August 28, 2026
Work completed this week
- Paved base layers of asphalt in the Garfield Avenue intersection.
- Continued pouring sidewalk at the Garfield Avenue intersection.
- Began storm sewer construction west of the Garfield Avenue intersection.
- Began work on the “Welcome to Lincoln Park” sign foundation.
- Continued work on conduit and light bases for street lighting.
Anticipated work scheduled for next week
- Set up for concrete pours from Michigan Street to Garfield Avenue.
- Continue storm sewer construction west of the Garfield Avenue intersection.
- Begin water main construction west of the Garfield Avenue intersection.
- Continue sign foundation work.
- Prepare bus shelter pads east of Garfield Avenue.
Expected impacts from next week’s work
- None expected outside of the road closures.
Closed areas
- W Superior Street from west of 18th Avenue W to Michigan Street except for Garfield Avenue/Piedmont Avenue and access to 16th Avenue W.
Detour routes
- Vehicle traffic: Eastbound W Superior Street traffic is detoured at 21st Avenue W onto West 1st Street to 5th Avenue W; westbound W Superior Street traffic is detoured along W Michigan Street/Lower Michigan Street to 21st Avenue W.
- Cross City Trail users: No detour route, Cross City Trail is complete through the project area.
Access to businesses
- M&H Gas Station: Access is along the westbound detour route. MNDOT’s closure of W Superior Street/W Michigan Street begins past M&H for eastbound traffic.
- Duluth Gospel Tabernacle: Access via Garfield Avenue or Piedmont Avenue to 16th Avenue W.
- Businesses in the 1700 block of West Superior Street: Pedestrian access will be maintained from the west end of the project.
