City of Duluth to reopen W Michigan Street at the W Superior Street intersection on Saturday, August 8
[DULUTH, MN] The City of Duluth has completed the work within the W Michigan Street intersection with W Superior Street that is part of the larger reconstruction project and will reopen the intersection by the end of the day on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The project includes the complete reconstruction of West Superior Street, including the roadway and underground utilities, between Carlton Street and W Michigan Street. Construction for the 2026 season is anticipated to be complete in November. The overall project will be completed in three construction phases, with final completion anticipated in 2028.
The West Superior Street detour will be transitioned from W First Street onto W Michigan Street and Lower Michigan Street. A signed vehicle detour will direct traffic to use 21st Avenue West to Lower Michigan Street and to follow that as it becomes W Michigan Street. The work required for this phase of the work on the Cross City Trail is complete at this time and there will no longer be a detour required for the trail due to this project.
The City maintains a project website, westsuperiorstreet.com, featuring project updates, final design information, and a map showing current road closures, detour routes, and parking locations. Residents and businesses are also encouraged to subscribe to the City's West Superior Street project email list to receive meeting notices, weekly construction updates, traffic control changes, and other project information at duluthmn.gov/web-subscriptions/.
