[DULUTH, MN] City of Duluth, along with its partners from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the South Saint Louis Soil and Water Conservation District (SSLSWCD) will gather to celebrate the completion of the $1.3 million Buckingham Creek restoration project in combination with more than $6 million of irrigation system improvements at Enger Park Golf Course at 2:00 pm on Monday, August 10, 2026.  City of Duluth, Duluth Parks and Recreation staff, and agency partners will provide remarks and project details during the media event.

 

The Buckingham Creek Restoration Project restored approximately 3,600 feet of Buckingham Creek and its tributary as they flow through Enger Park Golf Course. Buckingham Creek contains some of the coldest water of any trout stream in the City, making it an especially important refuge for brook trout and other cold-water species.

 

A new irrigation system, irrigation pond, and improvements to fairways were priorities in the Enger Park Golf Course Renovation Plan, adopted by City Council in 2021. The new irrigation system services all 27 holes and the driving range practice area, effectively renewing the entire irrigation system.

 

Through a collaborative partnership between the City of Duluth, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the South St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District, this project restored Buckingham Creek by replacing fish barriers with clear-span bridges, rerouting the creek around warm irrigation ponds, building a naturally meandering channel, reconnecting the floodplain, and adding amenities to re-create high-quality trout habitat. The irrigation system is now separated from Buckingham Creek, and operates more efficiently to maintain course conditions.
