West Superior Street reconstruction project update for week of July 24, 2026

Work completed this week

  • Continued reconnecting water services east of Garfield Avenue to new water main.
  • Blasted rock for storm sewer trenches and began excavation.
  • Poured median curb and curb on the north side of W Michigan Street.
  • Reconnected water services east of Garfield Avenue to new water main.
  • Continued electrical work along W Michigan Street.
  • Milled asphalt pavement in the Garfield Avenue/Piedmont Avenue intersection with W Superior Street.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week

  • Pave W Michigan Street and the Cross City Trail.
  • Construct the foundation for the welcome monument sign.
  • Remove pavement, construct water main and storm sewer, and grade surface in the Garfield Avenue/Piedmont Avenue intersection with W Superior Street.
  • Continue rock removal along storm sewer runs on W Superior Street.

Expected impacts from next week’s work

  • Work in the Garfield Avenue/Piedmont Avenue intersection with W Superior Street will close that intersection beginning July 27.
  • The Contractor will coordinate with Garfield Square Apartments and Duluth Gospel Tabernacle for access through the closure.

Closed areas

  • W Michigan Street at W Superior Street.
  • W Superior Street from 225 feet east of 18th Avenue W to Michigan Street except for access to 16th Avenue W.

Detour routes

  • Vehicle traffic: Detoured at 21st Avenue W and Fifth Avenue W onto West First Street. Piedmont Avenue and Garfield Avenue are detoured onto Railroad Street to Fifth Avenue W and along the previously existing detour.
  • Cross City Trail users: No detour route; a section of the trail is on a gravel surface and will be directed through the construction zone when paving is taking place.

Access to businesses

  • M&H Gas Station: Access from the east side of the project via West Superior Street or Glen Place.
  • Duluth Gospel Tabernacle: Access via Piedmont Avenue to 16th Avenue W until approximately midweek at which time access will be via Garfield Avenue to 16th Avenue W.
  • Businesses in the 1700 block of West Superior Street: Access from the west side of the project.
