West Superior Street reconstruction project update July 2, 2026
Work completed this week
- Completed water main install to 16th Avenue W and finished testing the main.
- Finished storm sewer installation on W Michigan Street and continued onto W Superior Street.
- Began grading for roadway on W Michigan Street.
Anticipated work scheduled for next week
- Continue to grade W Michigan Street and the Cross City Trail.
- Begin to place base course for curb and gutter construction.
- Flush water main and continue connecting water services to the new main from the temporary system.
- Continue rock removal and possible blasting.
Expected impacts from next week’s work
- Short duration water interruptions are expected east of Garfield Avenue as the transition is made from the temporary water system to the permanent one. The Contractor will notify impacted residents.
- Blasting is planned to be used for rock removal near the Point of Rocks as early as the end of next week, pedestrian access will be restricted in the vicinity directly before and after any blasting. The Contractor will notify nearby properties when the specific timing is known.
Closed areas
- W Michigan Street at W Superior Street
- W Superior Street from 225’ east of 18th Avenue W to Michigan Street except for the intersection with Garfield Avenue and access to 16th Avenue W
- Cross City Trail at the intersection of W Michigan Street and W Superior Street
Detour routes
- Vehicle traffic: Detoured at 21st Avenue W and 5th Avenue W onto West 1st Street.
- Cross City Trail users: Detoured onto Garfield Avenue, then Railroad Street, reconnecting with the trail.
Access to businesses
- M&H Gas Station: Access from the east side of the project via West Superior Street or Glen Place.
- Duluth Gospel Tabernacle: Access via Piedmont Avenue or Garfield Avenue to 16th Avenue W.
- Businesses in the 1700 block of West Superior Street: Access from the west side of the project.
