West Superior Street reconstruction project update Friday, June 12, 2026
Work completed this week
- Continued utility relocations in Michigan Street.
- Began water main excavation and installation in Michigan Street.
- Completed retaining wall pours at the intersection with Garfield Avenue.
- Began filling vaults under the sidewalk.
Anticipated work scheduled for next week
- Continue utility relocations in Michigan Street.
- Begin constructing storm sewer.
- Backfill retaining wall at the intersection with Garfield Avenue.
- Continue water main excavation and installation.
- Continue to fill vaults under the sidewalk.
Expected impacts from next week’s work
- No expected impacts outside of the current construction areas.
Closed areas
- W Michigan Street at W Superior Street
- W Superior Street from 225 feet east of 18th Avenue W to Michigan Street, except for the intersection with Garfield Avenue and access to 16th Avenue W
- Cross City Trail at the intersection of W Michigan Street and W Superior Street
Detour routes
- Vehicle traffic: Detoured at 21st Avenue W and Fifth Avenue W onto West First Street.
- I-35 will be closed in both directions between I-535 and 5th Avenue W from 10 p.m. Friday, June 12, through 5 a.m. Monday, June 15, for removal of the pedestrian bridge over I-35. Motorists should expect additional congestion in the area and follow all posted detours, as regional traffic will be routed around multiple active construction zones.
- Cross City Trail users: Detoured onto Garfield Avenue, then Railroad Street, reconnecting with the trail.
- MnDOT has closed the pedestrian bridge over I-35 as part of its replacement project. Trail users should follow the signed detour route to cross I-35. Access to businesses
- M&H Gas Station: Access from the east side of the project via West Superior Street or Glen Place.
- Duluth Gospel Tabernacle: Access via Piedmont Avenue or Garfield Avenue to 16th Avenue W.
- Businesses in the 1700 block of West Superior Street: Access from the west side of the project.
