West Superior Street reconstruction project update Friday, May 15, 2026

 

 

Work completed this week

  • Traffic control was installed and project equipment brought to the site.
  • Existing asphalt pavement on West Superior Street was milled between Piedmont Avenue/Garfield Avenue and Michigan Street.
  • The retaining wall west of Garfield Avenue was removed.
  • Crews began removing the existing concrete pavement along West Michigan Street.
  • Fusing work began on the pipe needed for temporary water services.

Anticipated work scheduled for next week

  • Concrete pavement removals will continue along West Superior Street.
  • Delivery of reinforcing steel is expected, and crews will begin constructing the new retaining wall footings west of Garfield Avenue.
  • Work will continue on installation of the temporary water system.

Expected impacts from next week’s work

  • Short water outages will occur as the contractor disconnects buildings from the existing water main and connects them to the temporary water system.
  • The Public Information Coordinator will contact affected properties directly to coordinate timing and the anticipated procedure.

Closed areas

  • W Michigan Street at W Superior Street
  • W Superior Street from 18th Avenue W to Michigan Street except for the intersection with Garfield Avenue and access to 16th Avenue W and businesses on the 1700 block of W Superior Street
  • Cross City Trail at the intersection of W Michigan Street and W Superior Street

Detour routes

  • Vehicle traffic: Detoured at 21st Avenue W and 5th Avenue W onto West 1st Street.
  • Cross City Trail users: Detoured onto Garfield Avenue, then Railroad Street, reconnecting with the trail.

Access to businesses

  • M&H Gas Station: Access from the east side of the project via West Superior Street or Glen Place.
  • Duluth Gospel Tabernacle: Access via Piedmont Avenue or Garfield Avenue to 16th Avenue W.
  • Businesses in the 1700 block of West Superior Street: Access from the west side of the project through the construction zone for traffic heading to those businesses.
