West Superior Street reconstruction project begins

[DULUTH, MN] Work on the City of Duluth’s West Superior Street reconstruction project began on Monday, May 11. This project is a complete reconstruction of West Superior Street including the road surface and underground utilities between Carlton Street and West Michigan Street.

West Superior Street is closed to traffic between 18th Avenue W and W Michigan Street, except for Garfield/Piedmont Avenue and access to businesses from the west end. West Michigan Street is closed to traffic at the West Superior Street intersection with access to the M&H Gas Station from the east (downtown) side or using Glen Place Drive. Duluth’s Cross City Trail is closed at the intersection of West Superior Street and West Michigan Street.

A signed detour route directs traffic along W First Street between Fifth Avenue W and 21st Avenue W. A signed trail detour directs Cross City Trail traffic along West Superior Street to Garfield Avenue and then along Railroad Street.

This construction phase (phase one) includes the reconstruction of the West Michigan Street intersection with West Superior Street. This phase is expected to be completed in July, with full completion for the 2026 construction season anticipated in November. The project will occur in three phases with final project completion in 2028.

The City has a project website, westsuperiorstreet.com, that provides the public project updates, final design, and a map that will be updated with current closures, detour routes, and parking locations in the area. The City also has a web subscription for the West Superior Street project that interested people are encouraged to sign up to  receive meeting invitations, weekly updates, traffic control changes, and other project information. Those wishing to subscribe can visit duluthmn.gov/web-subscriptions/ to do so.
