Perch Lake Landing improvements project construction to begin Monday, May 11

[DULUTH, MN] The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Minnesota Land Trust have made substantial progress on the habitat restoration for Perch Lake. The restoration project includes removal of accumulated sediment, and a new, widened culvert to improve water circulation between Perch Lake and the St. Louis River.

Now that habitat restoration and enhancement work is complete, the City of Duluth will begin work on trailhead and landing improvements to provide better opportunities for people to enjoy the recently restored Perch Lake and access the St. Louis River. Beginning Monday, May 11, the Perch Lake Landing site will be closed to the public, including the parking lot, fishing pier, and trail access, to allow for construction activities to begin. The project will include paving the parking lot, stormwater management improvements, and the addition of an adaptive kayak launch, picnic facilities, and a vault toilet. The closure is expected to last until mid to late July.

In 2024, the City received a subgrant of $156,600 from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) through the MN DNR to support access improvements at Perch Lake.

The subgrant supported the purchase of an accessible paddle launch and dock, signage, bike racks, pedestrian bridge repairs, and gravel for topdressing the trail. The funding also supported the full design of these future landing improvements so that the community and visitors are able to enjoy the site.
