[DULUTH, MN] Duluth Fire Department responded at 8:00 am on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 to a report of a fire alarm and possible structure fire in an apartment facility located on the 300 block of W First Street. An apartment on the third floor of the structure had a fire that was being extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system. The sprinkler system prevented the fire from reaching the rest of the structure. Firefighters from downtown headquarters, Lincoln Park, UMD, and Duluth Heights assisted in the incident.
Tenants and their pets were evacuated during the incident but were allowed to return to their homes after a return was deemed safe. Only one tenant was displaced by the fire and is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
No injuries were reported in the incident. The building sustained some water damage due to the deployment of the sprinkler system. Damage is estimated at $5000 to the apartment of fire origin’s contents and $100K in water damage in the structure.
The incident is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s office. The cause is not thought to be suspicious at this time.
Duluth Fire Department thanks its partners St. Louis County/911 dispatch, the American Red Cross, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, and Duluth Police Department for their assistance in the response.
