City of Duluth provides snowplow operations update

Thursday, April 2, 2026 4:00 PM

[DULUTH, MN] The current low-pressure system that arrived a bit later than expected this morning has dropped a round of two to three inches of wet, sloppy snow today onto city roadways so far, and the National Weather Service in Duluth has forecast a range of five to nine total inches by Friday afternoon. A break in the action is expected Friday afternoon, and a new system is forecast to entre the area later in the evening. That system is forecast to bring a higher moisture coefficient due to the slightly higher temperatures, but it is expected to leave the area mid-day on Saturday after it drops another few inches of wet, heavy slush/mixed precipitation.

City of Duluth snowplow operators are out clearing snow/slush and ice from P1 and P2 roadways until early evening, at which time most operators will take a rest break until 2:00 am.  A few operators will stay on through night to keep P1 roadways clear for emergency vehicles. Drivers should expect some pooling of slush and water on the roadways while these systems are doing what they do. Pooling can increase the chance of hydroplaning, so drivers should take it slow and be prepared to feather or lightly and repeatedly pump their brakes should they begin to hydroplane. Pedestrians should also beware of slippery walkways. The City of Duluth asks residents to avoid driving if they can, and to give the plow operators plenty of room if they must be on the roads. Remember to always take it slow on snow and ice.

Parked vehicles and illegally parked vehicles continue to be an issue that hampers plowing progress, so please be mindful of parking regulations, or risk your vehicle being ticketed and/or towed. Alternate side parking is on the odd side of the street this week.

Residents can follow the National Weather Service in Duluth on social media or the web to keep up to date with their forecasts.

The City of Duluth will provide updates as conditions warrant. The City thanks residents for their patience and understanding as crews work to maintain roads during and after snow events. Please stay safe while traveling.
