City of Duluth and Mayor Roger Reinert to host brief birthday celebration tomorrow, March 6, to honor the City’s anniversary

12:00 pm | Friday, March 6, 2026 | Duluth City Hall, rotunda | 411 W First Street, Duluth, MN

[DULUTH, MN] Following the Lyric Opera of the North performance in Duluth’s City Hall tomorrow, March 6, 2026 at noon, Mayor Roger Reinert and City staff will hold a short “birthday” celebration to honor the 156th anniversary of the City’s first official recognition as a city.

Birthday cake will be served in the rotunda following LOON’s performance, and staff and residents will join together in singing “Happy Birthday” to celebrate. Additionally, both Enger Tower and the Aerial Lift Bridge will be lit in the colors of the Duluth City flag (blue, green, and white) to honor this day.

The City of Duluth has five anniversaries: Duluth’s first plat was completed on May 26, 1856, and was then incorporated the following year on May 19, 1857. Duluth first officially became a city on March 6, 1870.

Duluth lost its city status in 1877 and became the District of Duluth administered by the State of Minnesota. Official city status was regained on March 2, 1887.  March 6, however, is the most widely-recognized official date.

The public and media are welcome to join in the celebration tomorrow.
