Structure Fire on 600 block of Woodland Avenue
[DULUTH, MN] Duluth Fire Department responded early this morning at 3:47 am, Tuesday, September 2, to a report of a structure fire on the 600 block of Woodland Avenue. Crews from the UMD fire station were first on scene to find a two-story residential structure showing heavy smoke from the basement and first floors; they were able to enter the back basement door and locate an active fire in the utility room that had breached the basement ceiling and were able to quickly knock the flames down. Crews from Downtown, Woodland, Lakeside, and Duluth Heights all assisted in the response.
Thanks to a working smoke alarm, all student occupants were alerted and able to act quickly to safely evacuate the structure. Six students are displaced at this time and are being assisted by the American Red Cross and/or friends.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Fire and water damage to the structure is estimated at $65K. The incident is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s office.
Duluth Fire Department thanks its partners at Minnesota Power and St. Louis County Emergency Services/911 dispatch for their assistance in the response. A special thanks goes to Duluth Police Department’s law enforcement officers, who went above and beyond in this incident response.
