Structure fire at 2226 W First Street

[DULUTH, MN] Duluth Fire Department were dispatched at 10:20 pm this evening to a call of a structure fire with heavy flames at 2226 W. First Street. Command called for a second alarm to the scene before arriving due to the smoke visible from blocks away. Crews arrived on scene to find a two-and-a-half-story side by side vacant duplex previously damaged by fire fully involved in fire on all four sides and all floors of the structure. Firefighter crews from Lincoln Park, Headquarters, Spirit Valley, Duluth Heights, and UMD worked to attack the fire and protect the exposures on either side of the structure; this has been a defensive fire, and firefighters have not yet entered the structure due to the fire’s severity and instability of the structure.

The structure is a total loss, with portions of the roof and upper structure collapsed. While the fire is largely extinguished at the time of the publication of this press release, firefighters will continue to work on scene for an undetermined amount of time.

This incident is active and ongoing and is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s office. Duluth Fire Department thanks Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County 911 dispatch, St. Louis County Sheriff's Department, Minnesota Power, and Duluth Public Works and Utilities for their assistance in this incident.

Due to the cold temperatures and water used in the firefighting effort, the roadways and sidewalks near the scene may have icy surfaces. Duluth Public Works and Utilities Street Maintenance crews will work through the night to clear the ice build-up in the area.

For their safety, the public is asked to avoid W. First Street between 22nd Avenue W and 23rd Avenue W, as well as Superior Street between 22nd Avenue W and 23rd Avenue W.
