Structure fire at 2011 W Second Street
[DULUTH, MN] Duluth Fire Department responded this evening at 5:23 pm to a call of a fire at Midtowne Manor, located at 2011 W Second Street. Crews from Lincoln Park, Headquarters, Spirit Valley, and UMD responded to find a kitchen fire in a single apartment unit. The fire was 75% contained by the sprinkler system in the building, and firefighters worked to completely extinguish it. Two people were in the unit at the time of the fire, and they self-evacuated the unit. The fire remained contained to the unit of origin, but a few adjacent units are affected by related water damage.
The number of residents displaced by either fire or water damage is unknown at the time of the release of this public information. The Housing Redevelopment Authority (HRA) is working to place any affected residents in other units.
There were no injuries reported in the incident. Fire damage to the structure is estimated at $10K, and water damage estimates are still being assessed. While the cause of the fire is not suspicious in nature, the cause remains under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s office.
Fire sprinkler systems save lives. The sprinkler system in Midtowne Manor kept this fire from spreading to other apartments and allowed residents to safely self-evacuate without injury or incident.
Duluth Fire Department was assisted in their response to this incident by their partners at the Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County 911 Dispatch, the HRA, Mayo Ambulance, and the Duluth Transit Authority (DTA), who sent a bus for residents to utilize for temporary shelter during the response.
