Duluth Fire Department responds to structure fire Sunday at 421 W. Third Street
[DULUTH, MN] Sunday evening, the Duluth Fire Department responded to the report of a fire in an apartment located at 421 W Third Street. Multiple callers reported smoke in the building.
Fire crews arrived at the address to find no visible smoke showing outside but did find a fire on the first floor of the structure. A second alarm was called to the scene in anticipation of greater fire extension due to high winds.
A search of the apartment entry found a person trying to evacuate. He was removed from the building by Duluth Firefighters. He was treated on the scene by Duluth Fire and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service. He was transported to Essentia Hospital for injuries sustained as a result of the fire and is being treated. His health status is not known at this time.
Other firefighters made their way into the apartment and extinguished the fire. The fire was contained to just the one apartment. A search of the building revealed no occupants inside. All had made their way out of the building safely.
Damage is limited to the fire-affected apartment, with some smoke damage in the common hallways and stairwells; there was also damage to a number of doors in the building as a result of the building search. Damages are estimated at $100,000 for the building and contents.
There were no other civilian or any firefighter injuries. Crews from the Duluth Police Department, Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service and Duluth Fire Department companies from headquarters, UMD, Miller Hill, Lincoln Park, and Spirit Valley responded to the scene. The American Red Cross was called to assist the building’s tenants to assess needs.
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time by the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's office.
