Injured DFD firefighter to undergo advanced physical therapy following hit-and-run incident
[DULUTH, MN] On Monday, February 12, DFD firefighter Ray Skoglund, who was critically injured in a hit and run incident while out for a run on January 25, 2024 in western Duluth, will be moved from Essentia in Duluth to Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado to receive advanced physical therapy to help facilitate a more complete and speedy recovery from his injuries.
Skoglund, 24, who sustained injuries that include broken limbs, broken ribs, fractured vertebrae, facial injuries, and brain injury, will be flown from Monaco Air by a medical transportation service to Craig Hospital, a neurorehabilitation center in Denver to undergo an inpatient advanced neurorehabilitative care plan. Members of the Duluth Fire Department, Hermantown Fire Department, Duluth Police Department, and the Minnesota Air National Guard’s 148th Fighter Wing will stage a large US flag at Monaco to honor their brother Ray with a proper send-off.
Duluth Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj would like to thank everyone who has supported Raymond’s journey thus far. “We are honored to support the Skoglund family through their darkest hours and look forward to standing by Ray during his continued recovery,” said Chief Krizaj. “We can’t wait to welcome Ray and his family back when he can walk into Headquarters and hopefully take his place on 1 Engine.”
"The City of Duluth is standing strong behind firefighter Skoglund and his family as he takes the next step in his recovery journey," said Mayor Roger Reinert. "We know the road ahead for him may be long, but if anyone can tackle this marathon, it is Raymond."
Skoglund’s flight is scheduled to depart Monaco Air at 11:45 AM Monday. He will be transferred from Essentia to Monaco by Mayo Ambulance. The length of his stay at Craig Hospital is currently not determined. His presence at DFD Headquarters continues to be missed by all of his DFD brothers and sisters, who wish him a speedy and thorough recovery.
