SUBJECT: Apartment Fire

This morning, the Duluth Fire Department responded to 1232 E 1st St for the report of automatic fire alarm that was quickly upgraded to a structure fire on numerous reports of explosions in the apartment. Crews arrived to find light smoke coming from the front and East side of the second floor. Members began evacuating that portion of the building and made entry into the fire-affected apartment. A fire in the kitchen was discovered and quickly extinguished. Fire damage was limited to the single apartment, but smoke and water damage was shared by a number of apartments in that segment of the building.
No humans were injured in the fire but two cats in the the fire apartment were found dead as a result of smoke inhallation. Efforts were taken to revive them, but were not successful. The fire had created a large amount of smoke that moved to the second level of the apartment. The pets were found on the second level of the apartment.
The reported explosions heard were a few food service aerosol cans found in the kitchen. The cause of thie fire is underinvestigation by the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office.
Crews from Downtown, Lakeside, Woodland, UMD, Lincoln Park, Spirit Valley and Miller Hill were called to the scene along with the Duluth Police Department and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service.
