Superior Street Closed Due to Flash Flood Impacts at First Avenue E

[DULUTH, MN] Overnight on September 11, 2023 two to three inches of rain fell over about an hour and caused significant erosion within the First Avenue E construction zone. Approximately 1000 cubic yards of material washed out onto Superior Street and has made the road impassable. Superior Street is currently closed at Lake Avenue and Second Avenue E; existing detours are signed for other construction in the area using First Avenue W, Fourth Street, and Second Avenue E. The contractor is working as quickly as possible to remove the material and to reopen Superior Street. The road is expected to reopen by the end of the day today.

The contractor and the City will be examining the First Avenue E construction site to determine how much damage it sustained and how long restoration will take. It is expected that this will delay the reopening of First Avenue E.

For more information, please contact the City of Duluth Engineering division at 218-730-5200.
