Structure Fire at 2228 W. First Street

[DULUTH, MN] At 4:42 AM, DFD was dispatched to a report of smoke inside a side-by-side duplex located at 2228 W. First Street. 2 Engine arrived within three minutes and observed fire inside one of the two units. 2 Engine attacked the fire, knocking it down and keeping it from spreading to the rest of the building with the help of 1 Engine, 1 Tower, Rescue 1, and 8 Quint.

Three adults, two dogs, and one cat were safely evacuated from the residence. They are currently displaced due to the damage and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. Damage to the structure and its contents are estimated to be around $85K. No injuries were reported.

“Because of this family’s diligence in keeping their smoke detector batteries fresh and their detectors working, this family is safe, their pets are safe, and everyone is uninjured. They were able to quickly call 911 and get fast assistance from DFD,” said DFD Assistant Chief Dennis Edwards of the incident. “Anytime is always a good time to remind the public to check their smoke detectors and make sure they’re in good working order.”

DFD thanks the Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County 911 Dispatch, Comfort Systems, MN Power, and the American Red Cross for their assistance in the response to this incident.
