Public comment period open for the draft Lakewalk Interpretive Plan

[DULUTH, MN] The public is invited to review and comment on the draft Lakewalk Interpretive Plan. The public comment period will close on Monday, May 8, 2023.

The draft Lakewalk Interpretive Plan, interpretive signage panel content, and a comment form is available at https://duluthmn.gov/parks/parks-planning/progress-in-the-park/lakewalk-interpretive-plan/. A printed copy of the plan is available for review at the Parks and Recreation office on the ground floor of City Hall during regular office hours (8:30 am – 4:00 pm).

The purpose of the Plan is to define specific elements and common themes for interpretation along the existing trail and the segments soon to be reconstructed during the Lakewalk resiliency and Harbor Plaza improvements. Themes will invite visitors to gain a richer understanding of the area and create meaningful spaces for visitors to engage. Interpretive elements will include historical, cultural, and artistic representations of people and place.

The project area includes the riverfront segments of the Baywalk along Bayfront Festival Park, the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, and the south side of Canal Park, and then continues along the Lakewalk from the ship canal to 21st Avenue East. Altogether, the project spans nearly 3.5 miles of designated trail.

After the public comment period closes, Parks and Recreation will review the comments received, incorporate changes where appropriate, and prepare the final Lakewalk Interpretive Plan for consideration at the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on June 14, 2023 before bringing it to City Council for final approval.

For more information about the project, please contact Senior Parks Planner, Cliff Knettel at 218-730-4312 or cknettel@duluthmn.gov.
