Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park) construction activities to begin September 26, 2022

[Duluth, MN] The City of Duluth will begin shoreline restoration work at Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park) on Monday, September 26. The Lakewalk through Brighton Beach will remain open during this phase of construction, but users are encouraged to be mindful of their surroundings with construction activities taking place in the area. The greenspace and park amenities will be inaccessible through, at least, the fall of 2023.

The Brighton Beach Mini-Master Plan, adopted August 19, 2019, called for extension of the Lakewalk, relocation of the road away from the shoreline, and restoration of the shoreline to better endure Lake Superior storms. With the Lakewalk extension completed last fall, this new phase of coastal work will set the stage for the park landscape and amenities between the shoreline and Lakewalk to be improved in summer 2023. During this current phase, the Lakewalk will remain open for users, however, the remaining parkland will be closed.

Motor vehicle access to the park, including parking, will not be restored until the road reconstruction project is complete, estimated to be in fall of 2023.

Due to ongoing long-term closures for construction, there will be no events, programming or reservations allowed at Brighton Beach until spring of 2024 at the earliest.
