CORRECTED: City to host public meeting on coastal resilience and mitigation study on February 16
[Duluth, MN] The City of Duluth will host a public meeting on Wednesday, February 16th, at 7:00 p.m. to provide information on a coastal resilience and mitigation study. The study is a part of a $258,000 grant that the City received from FEMA to find solutions to shoreline collapses on the North Shore from Brighton Beach to Knife River. The study will also evaluate the bayside of the Park Point Recreation Area and determine mitigation options for storm surge-related flooding and resulting erosion.
Funding will pay for the areas of interest to be studied while determining solutions with the help of consultants. The grant will also pay for the pre-design phase of the project, which will set the City and its partners up to apply for funding that would assist in implementing the study's outcomes.
The City was able to apply for funding because of storm damage that created millions of dollars in damage and ongoing shoreline collapse issues around the bayside of Park Point Recreation Area. The study will analyze and recommend remediation best practices for shoreline areas at risk from the impacts of future inclement weather.
The portion of this project that will evaluate the area of the North Shore from Brighton Beach to Knife River is a partnership with St. Louis County.
In an earlier press release, the City had incorrectly reported that the study would include the Saint Louis River Estuary and areas in Canal Park. These areas were initially included in the study's scope of work and have since been removed in exchange for reviewing the impacts of flooding at the Park Point Recreation Area. The City regrets the error.
The meeting will include a presentation from the City's project consultants. The agenda includes:
- Introductions and Project Background
- Study Process and Area of Study Overview
- Prioritization Methodology Review and High Priority Site Identification
- Demo of Online Engagement Tools – Website, Survey, Crowdsource Map
- Questions and Comments
The public meetings are a requirement of the grant. This meeting is the first of three that will be held. The dates of the second and third meetings are forthcoming.
