West Duluth family displaced after fire causes $60,000 in damages
[Duluth, MN] A West Duluth family has been displaced after a fire that started in the basement caused their home to be condemned. Duluth Fire crews responded to the report of a bed on fire at a split-level home on the 600 block of South 65th Avenue West, just after 3:30 p.m., today, January 19, 2022.
When crews arrived on scene they reported seeing smoke from a window in the 1st story of the home. Crews entered the home and found an active fire in a basement bedroom. Crews were able to charge lines and extinguish the fire. Crews from Headquarters conducted a primary search which resulted in an all clear. After talking to the homeowners, they confirmed that everyone including pets were out of the home.
Crews then shifted efforts to look for fire extension on the first floor. No extension was found. Crews then started ventilating the home. Damages are estimated at $40,000 for the structure and $20,000 for contents.
The home was condemned due to the amount of fire and smoke within the space from the incident. The family has been connected to the American Red Cross for assistance.
No one was injured as a result of the fire.
Crews from Headquarters, Spirit Valley, and West Duluth responded to the fire.
The cause is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshall’s Office. No additional information is available at this time.
