This evening, the Duluth Fire Department responded to the report of a second floor apartment showing smoke and flames. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the upper floor of a four-plex apartment building. Crews made entry, searched the apartment and extinguished the fire. Crews then checked for fire extension to the attic and wall spaces. There was no fire extension found.
The fire apartment was again searched and a cat was found alive, but in poor condition. The cat was brought outside and given oxygen. The cat was then taken to the Blue Pearl Animal Hospital for evaluation. There were no human injuries to report.
Other units in the building were checked to ensure that occupants were fine and that the living space was habitable. Two of the units were found to be habitable. The fire apartment and the apartment below were found to be not habitable.
Persons displaced were contacted and assisted in making temporary living arrangements.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Any inquires regarding this incident should be directed to the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office.
Fire companies from Gary, Spirit Valley, Lincoln Park and Downtown responded to this incident. Duluth Police, Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service and Comfort Systems assisted in the incident.
