DWP Trail Corridor Ribbon Cutting & Bike Ride to be held Tuesday, September 21, at 4:00 p.m.
[Duluth, MN] The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation division will hold ribbon cutting and bike ride on Tuesday, September 21 at 4:00 p.m. to celebrate the significant improvements recently made to the Duluth, Winnipeg, and Pacific (DWP) Trail Corridor. The ribbon cutting will take place at Frederick Rodney Paine Forest Preserve trailhead located at 2509 Becks Road. Attendees are encouraged to practice social distancing during the event.
The ribbon cutting will be followed by a group bicycle ride! Please join us for a fun, staff-led bike ride from the trailhead to Ely’s Peak Tunnel and back. The bike ride will be an approximately 3.2 mile trail ride, and the trail meets ADA standards for an accessible recreation trial route. Please bring your own bike and helmet.
The DWP is a scenic route, high above the river estuary and the Munger Trail, with two steel trestles and a tunnel under Ely’s Peak. The corridor provides a true Midwest mountain multi-use trail experience and acts as a spine for planned Western Duluth trail networks. Completed DWP Trail Corridor work includes: improvements to grading and stormwater management, limestone capping, restoration of railroad trestles, removal of two wood railroad bridges, restoration of Clyde Connector Trail, rock scaling and removal from the tunnel and 23 rock cuts, construction of a dedicated trailhead on Beck’s road, as well as signage and wayfinding installation. Combined, this work has transformed the DWP into a universally accessible multi-use pathway.
This project was made possible by funding from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Regional Trail Grant Program, Federal Recreational Trail Program, and Parks and Trails Legacy Grant Program, as well as half and half tourism tax funds.
Please join us for an afternoon promoting sustainable outdoor recreation in Duluth!
