BY: Assistant Chief Brent Consie
NATURE OF INCIDENT: House Fire
CASE NO.: 21009935
INCIDENT DATE: 9/6/2021
INCIDENT TIME: 1214
INCIDENT LOCATION: 926 W 5th St
This morning, the Duluth Fire Department responded for the report of a fire and explosion in the 1100 Block of W 5th St. Fire units were given a report from the Duluth Police on scene of fire coming from a window in the alley. The address was updated to the 900 block of West 5th St.
Units arrived to find fire coming from the rear of the building in what appeared to be an attached garage beneath the house. The garage door had been partially displaced. Fire dispatch called Fire units and advised them that a dog had been removed from the home by a neighbor prior to arrival of fire crews. The dog was reunited with his owner.
The fire was quickly extinguished and the house was thoroughly searched. There were no injuries to report. Damage by the fire was limited to the garage area. The single-family dwelling appeared to suffer no structural damage that would make the building unstable and eyewitness reports of an explosion have yet to be confirmed.
Damage is estimated to be $20,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office. Any inquires relating to this incident should be directed to the Fire Marshal's Office.
Duluth Police were on scene and assisted in locating the fire building, securing the resident dog and traffic management. Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service came to the scene to stand by for assistance.
