SUBJECT: Structure Fire
BY: Assistant Chief Brent Consie
NATURE OF INCIDENT: House Fire
CASE NO.: 21007301
INCIDENT DATE: 7/8/2021
INCIDENT TIME: 14:13
INCIDENT LOCATION: 108 E 2nd St
This afternoon, the Duluth Fire Department responded for the report of a house fire with flames showing. Crews arrived on scene to find the front of the house on fire. Crews searched the 3 unit apartment building and found four dogs, who were all safely rescued from the building.
The fire was quickly extinguished. Initial investigation by fire crews revealed that the fire was located on the outside of the building and under a front porch bay-type window. Further investigation by the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office revealed that a discarded cigarette was the cause of the fire. There was no damage to the interior of the building and no one will be displaced as a result.
Damage is estimated at $5,000 for the building. There were no injuries to report. Any inquiries regarding this incident may be directed to the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office.
The Duluth Fire Department would like to take the opportunity to alert those that smoke cigarettes to smoke away from buildings and to extinguish cigarettes in water or in an approved closed-type container located away from the building. Do not place in a 'butt can' or something that will allow the material to continue to burn and generate enough heat to start a building fire.
Fire units responded from Downtown, Lincoln Park and Spirit Valley. The Duluth Police, Minnesota Power and Duluth Comfort Systems also responded to render assistance.
