SUBJECT: Structure fire
BY: Assistant Chief Brent Consie
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure fire
CASE NO.: 21-0000640
INCIDENT DATE: 1/19/2021
INCIDENT TIME: 12:30
INCIDENT LOCATION: 2112 W Superior St.
Early this afternoon, crews from the Duluth Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke venting from an elevator penthouse on the roof. Due to the size of the building and fire load potential, a second alarm was immediately called for, bringing an additional three fire companies to the scene.
Crews had difficulty finding the origin of the fire due to a challenging floor layout and a number of businesses that had occupied the building. It was discovered by one of the fire companies that the location of the fire was in the basement and best accessed from the rear of the building. Crews were then able to locate and extinguish the fire.
Because of the size of the building, it took a couple of hours to vent the building of heat and smoke and to be sure that the fire was fully extinguished.
Damages are estimated to be 50,000. The building was not occupied at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation and any inquiries regarding this incident should be directed to the Duluth Fire Department's Fire Marshal's Office.
30 firefighters from 7 fire companies stationed at Lincoln Park, Spirit Valley, Gary, Downtown, UMD and Miller Hill fire stations responded to this call. The Duluth Police Department, Duluth Public Works, Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service and Minnesota Power also responded to the scene to provide assistance.
