Red Flag Warning Issued Today for Park Point Beach

A red flag warning has been issued today by the Duluth Weather Service NOAA, Duluth Fire Department and Parks and Receration Division for Park Point Beach. Conditions are favorable for rip currents to develop.  People are advised to stay out of the water.  Red flags have been posted at 12th Street South "s" curve, LaFayette Recreation Center and in front of the Park Point Beach house.   Warning signs advising no swimming are visible along the beach.  Lifeguards will not be on duty today.

Rip currents are formed when waves break near the shoreline, piling up water between the breaking waves and the beach. One of the ways the water returns to the lake is to form a rip current, a narrow jet of water moving swiftly offshore, roughly perpendicular to the shoreline.

If caught in a rip current: remain calm to conserve energy and think clearly, never fight against the current, swim out of the current in a direction following the shoreline, if you are unable to swim out of the rip current, float or calmly tread water, when out of the current swim toward shore, if you are unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself by waving your arms and yelling for help.

If you see someone in trouble don't become a victim too: call 911, throw the rip current victim something that floats such as a life jacket, a cooler or an inflatable ball, yell instructions on how to escape. Remember, many people drown while trying to save someone else from a rip current.
