NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 00246
INCIDENT DATE: 1/8/2021
INCIDENT TIME: 12:28 AM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1801 East 2nd Street

At 12:28 a.m. on January 8th, 2021, the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 1801 East 2nd Street. Duluth Police Department squads were first to arrive and report that all residents were out of the building. 4 Quint and Squad 251 arrived shortly after. Heavy smoke was showing from the second and third stories of the three-unit, three-story apartment building. The crew from 4 Quint advanced an attack line to the third story, while the crew from 1 Engine advanced an attack line to the second story. Firefighters encountered heavy fire and zero visibility on the second floor, extending to the third floor. The fire was quickly knocked down, and fire crews from Rescue 1 and 1 Tower continued to overhaul and extinguish the fire that had extended into walls and floor spaces. In the meantime, crews did primary searches on all levels, shut off utilities to the building, and provided water supply from two hydrants.

Firefighters were on the scene for approximately three hours, and there were no injuries. The four residents were all displaced by the fire. The initial damage estimate to the building is $35,000. The fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office. Firefighters from the Headquarters, UMD, Woodland, and Lakeside stations responded.
