SUBJECT: Structure Fire
BY: Assistant Chief Dennis Edwards
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 13601
INCIDENT DATE: 12/24/2020
INCIDENT TIME: 1747
INCIDENT LOCATION: 613 N 59th Ave W
At 5:47 p.m. on 12/24/20 the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire at 613 N 59th Ave West. 8 Quint from the Spirit Valley station was the first to arrive and encounter residents that stated there was a fire in the second floor unit of the duplex.
The 8 Quint crew advanced an attack line to the second story and encountered a smoke filled apartment with the tenant attempting to extinguish a rapidly moving fire in the wall. The resident was evacuated as fire crews pulled the wall and ceiling to extinguish the fire. The quick actions of the 8 Quint crew stopped the fire just as it was igniting the insulation in the attic. In the meantime, other Duluth Fire crews turned off the power to the building, provided water supply from a hydrant, checked for fire spread and covered furniture and other valuables in the apartment below the fire.
The fire has been ruled accidental and electrical in nature. Initial damage estimates are $20,000 to the structure and $10,000 to contents. There were no injuries to the residents or the firefighters. Two residents have been displaced until the damage can be repaired. Fire crews from Spirit Valley, Gary, Lincoln Park and Headquarters responded.
