SUBJECT: Structure Fire

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 13572
INCIDENT DATE: 12/23/2020
INCIDENT TIME: 2035
INCIDENT LOCATION: 331 N 28th Ave W

At 8:35 p.m. on 12/23/20 the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 331 N 28th Ave West in Lincoln Park. Number 2 Engine was first on scene and reported heavy smoke and a working fire. Firefighters from Spirit Valley, Headquarters and Duluth Heights joined in the fight and attacked the fire in the basement, first and second floors and the attic. Because of the nature of balloon frame construction lacking fire stops, this fire quickly caused the building to be unsafe for interior firefighting and all forces were withdrawn from the interior. The fire was also wind driven as Duluth was experiencing a blizzard with high winds at the time.

The building manager reported that all residents had escaped before the fire department arrived and have been provided shelter elsewhere.  Cold temps and high winds have made efforts difficult and the DFD remains on scene at this time. We ask because of the dangerous weather and road conditions that civilians stay away from the area.

The fire is under investigation at this time and will continue to be when the fire is extinguished. There have been no firefighter injuries to this point. The Duluth Police Department and Public Works assisted at the scene.
