At 1835 hours the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in a multi unit apartment building in Morgan Park. Initial arriving companies reported smoke coming from a first floor apartment of the 81 unit, three story building.
The initial arriving engine company made entry past evacuating residents and rapidly located the fire in a first floor apartment. They were able to quickly extinguish a fast moving kitchen fire before it could extend beyond the unit.
Fire companies from Gary, Spirit Valley, Lincoln Park and Downtown responded to the fire with a total of 18 firefighters. Crews overhauled the damaged kitchen and ventilated the entire building of smoke, allowing most residents to return to their homes.
The Red Cross was requested and quickly responded to provide housing and assistance to the lone displaced resident of the affected unit.
Initial damage estimates are $25,000. There were no reported injuries. The origin and cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office.
